Barclay School
817 12th
This structure replaced the original Barclay School, and ornate building
with a round tower and conical roof built in 1888, which was in turn a
replacement for the Oregon City Seminary, Oregon City's first public
school. In 1944, a time capsule was placed by students just southwest of
the school, with the names of students and their predictions for the
future. The spot was marked with a mortared stone pyramid and a wooden
post with "Oregon Trail" printed on it. The marker was knocked down by a
car in the 1970s and now lies under a lilac bush. The time capsule is
probably still there, although students had intended for it to be opened
25 years after its burial. |

Barclay House (Wed-Sat 10-4)
Dr. Barclay came from Scotland to Fort Vancouver as a Hudson's Bay
Company physician in 1840. In 1850, he and his wife Maria Pambrun
Barclay and their seven children moved to Oregon City, where they became
prominent in community affairs. Dr. Barclay served variously as mayor of
Oregon City, superintendent of schools and the first coroner in Oregon,
as well as a physician. Dr. and Mrs. Barclay are now buried in the
Mountain View Cemetery in Oregon City. Their home, built in 1849,
remained in the Barclay family until the 1930's, when it was moved up
the hill from the waterfront to its present location adjacent to the
McLoughlin House. It was added to the National Park System in 2003,
along with the McLoughlin House, as a unit of Fort Vancouver National
Historic Site. |

McLoughlin House (Wed-Sat 10-4) Free
713 Center St.
Oregon City, OR 97045
45 minute tours begin at Barclay House
Dr. McLoughlin crossed the Rockies in 1824 and established Ft. Vancouver
in 1825. He proved to be a shrewd businessman, but he was always fair in
dealing with natives and settlers alike.
When American pioneers arrived on the Oregon Trail, they asked
McLoughlin for supplies to help them survive their first winter in
Oregon. His kindness to them would eventually cost him his job with the
HBC. He had purchased HBC's land claim at Willamette Falls (Oregon
City), and he and his family moved into his newly-built mansion in 1846
after being forced to retire. He died in this home in 1857. |

Stevens Crawford House
(Thurs-Sat 12-4)
603 6th St
Mary Elizabeth (Crawford) Stevens (1850-1932) was the
well-educated daughter of Medorem Crawford (1819-1891) who came west in
1842, with one of the first waves of immigrants on the Oregon Trail. He
settled in Oregon City and operated his own business transporting goods
around the Willamette Falls. He also farmed along the Clackamas River
and was a well-respected early member of the Provisional Legislature.
Among his distinguished roles, he served as a U.S. customs agent and a
captain assigned to the Emigrant Escort Service. It was Harley and
Mary Elizabeth's daughter Mertie (1872-1968) who, having lived in the
home most of her life, bequeathed it and its period furnishings to the
Clackamas County Historical Society.
Mertie spent her life in the
Stevens Crawford House. She collected men's, women's and children's hats
and other pieces of the past. She had more than 250 hats as well as
clothing, shoes and accessories. The 100 hats on display are part of her
collection. |

Built in 1845, is the oldest house in Clackamas County. The famous coin
flip between Asa Lawrence Lovejoy and Francis W. Pettygrove that
determined Portland's name as a city was held here. Lovejoy preferred
his hometown's name, Boston, and Pettygrove favored his hometown's name
of Portland, Maine. Pettygrove won the toss. Living history teas set in
the 1860s are held here, featuring people from Oregon's past. |

Rose Farm (Sat. 12-4) $4
636 Holmes Lane
Oregon City, OR 97045
William and Louisa Holmes were pioneers who joined the ‘great migration‘
in 1843. More than 900 souls traveled the trail west that year. The
Holmes family settled on a 640-acre land claim at the south edge of
Oregon City. They lived in a log cabin with a view of Mt. Hood (42 miles
east). Water came from a nearby spring, probably the source of Singer
Creek, which empties into the Willamette River after cascading down the
bluff near Main Street in Oregon City. Their home, completed in
1847, is the oldest American home in Oregon City and was the scene of
early government meetings and many social events. The first territorial
governor, Joseph Lane, gave his 1849 inaugural address from the balcony
of the Rose Farm, and the celebrants gathered on the lawn below.
The claim was nicknamed the ‘Rose Farm’ by friends and neighbors because
of the many roses Louisa planted in the garden. |
