SR 28 & Baxter on the left side by Mill Pond
The first mill in Yarmouth was built in 1710 by Thomas Baxter and Shubal Gorham. That
mill, a fulling mill, was also located in West Yarmouth near today's Swan's Pond. A few years later, the team built this
grist mill for grinding corn, and for many years it was operated by Baxter's sons, Thomas and Shubal. Baxter family members
operated the mill for several generations then sold to members of the Baker family, who operated the mill until 1900.
As originally constructed, the mill featured an outside waterwheel. Because the level of Mill Pond was low and winter
freezing caused much damage, the wheel was replaced with an interior power turbine around 1860. The mill operated for almost
200 years until about 1900, when electricity and commercial flour became readily available. The mill was restored in the
1960s by Harold Castonguay and George Kelley and given to the town of Yarmouth. It was the first site in Yarmouth to be
placed on the National Register of Historic Places. |

This windmill takes its name from its original builder, Judah Baker, who had the mill constructed in 1791. Like many early
windmills on Cape Cod, this mill experienced several moves before it came to its current location. Originating in South
Dennis, it was moved to Kelley's Pond, in Dennis, and later to the Yarmouth side of Bass River. By 1866, it rested near its
current location and was used by Braddock Matthews for milling grain. |

Hallet's Store- Built in 1889as a pharmacy, the store today is operated by the great-grandson of
the first owner, the fourth generation of the family to be involved with the business. Retaining all of its original fixtures
and charm, the store still offers old-fashioned sodas, a quick sandwich, and the best ice cream cone in town. Take a peek
upstairs at the Hallet Museum. Using family photographs, objects, and memorabilia, the Hallets created a museum, which
reflects the history, not just of one family, but of the entire community. Serves breakfast and lunch.

Historic Area- Join a costumed Ranger at the Hartwell Tavern for a 20-minute

reminder of how people lived in this area at the outbreak of the American Revolution. The home of Ephraim and Elizabeth
Hartwell and their children was not only a prosperous farm, but also operated as a tavern. The structure played a significant
role as a landmark in the community as travelers to and from Boston stopped and shared the latest news and discussed important
issues of the day. |
