Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park- (6 a.m.-8 p.m.) $5-Visitor Center (8-5:30, Begin your visit at the park’s visitor center where you can pick up the park’s brochure that includes information on the self guided trail. You might take in one of the orientation talks in the amphitheater, check the visitor center for the scheduled time.  The self-guided trail takes about 30 minutes and takes you through the royal grounds and place of refuge (pu’uhonua). Often you can find cultural demonstrators working and sharing their knowledge on traditional Hawaiian arts and crafts.  Picnickers can take the gravel road adjacent to the visitor center. This leads to a picnic area located near the shore and shaded by coconut trees. Barbecue pits and tables are available. Snorkeling is located next door at Honaunau bay.  For those who enjoy nature, you can often spot green sea turtles or humpback whales during the winter months. Handouts on the local plants and birds are also available. Turtles are endangered and protected by law, please enjoy them from at least 10 feet away.  Great Snorkeling-north of the boat launch.  Lots of turtles and coral.

Hulihe'e Palace-75-5718 Ali'i Drive-(M-F 9-4, Sat-Sun 10-4) $5  1 hour tour daily of house and ground.  This two-story stone structure was built by Governor John Kuakini in 1838. After his death the palace was passed down from heir to heir.  From 1844 until 1914, the palace was used by Hawaiian royalty as a vacation home. The house was remodeled and enlarged several times. In 1925 the Territory of Hawaii purchased the house to be operated by the Daughters of Hawaii as a museum. Today, most of the furniture and fixtures have been restored from the original monarchy and numerous artifacts and memorabilia are on display here.

Ahu'ena Heiau-FREE admission to the grounds from 9am - 4pm daily.  This well-restored religious site was the personal heiau of King Kamehemeha the Great. It is located on the grounds of the hotel but the public may visit the site during the day.  (Located behind the King Kamehameha Kona Beach Hotel at the end of Palani Road in Kailua-Kona. Easily seen from the the Kailua Pier.)

Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park-8:30-4 (Free) Visitor Station  It is the site of an ancient Hawaiian settlement which encompasses portions of four different ahupua'a, or traditional sea to mountain land divisions. Resources include fishponds, kahua (house site platforms), ki'i pohaku (petroglyphs), holua (stone slide), and heiau (religious site). (It is three miles north of Kailua-Kona.)
    Look for wild donkeys at Mile Marker 85.  Descendants of the coffee hauling donkeys from a century agao.

    (Go back to car and take Mauna Lani Drive east/right to junction.  Turn left/north on Kaniku Drive.  At next junction go left/west.  Turn right at next junction.  The trailhead to the petroglyph field is on the right.)
    Malama Petroglyph Trail-25 minute hike.  One of the most interesting and historical sites is the Malama Petroglyphs. These rock carvings were made thousands of years ago by ancient Hawaiians.  This archeological field has over 3000 carvings and is one of the largest collections in the state. The drawings are scattered throughout an old pahoehoe lava flow. 
    (The access road to the visitor center is located on 62-3601 Kawaihae Road, off of Route 270. One quarter mile (.4km) north of the Highway 19 intersection.)
   
Pu'ukohola National Historical Site- (7:30-4) John Young (Built by King Kamehameha's business manager and governor of the island from 1802 to 1812)

    Lapakahi State Historical Park- (Free) Remains of old Hawaiian village complete with markers noting interesting spots.  This self-guided tour takes about 45 minutes.

Kalahikiola Church-This Christian church was built in 1855 by Rev. Elias Bond who brought religion, schools and medicine to this remote area of Hawaii. A distinctive feature of this church is the square steeple.  Take Highway 270 north past Hawi going toward Kapa'au. Before Mile Marker #24 turn right and go approximately 1/2 mile. Free-Glorious Akaka Falls, where water tumbles 420 feet into a stream-eroded gorge, is considered a "must see" on the Big Island.  A pleasant, moderately challenging half-mile loop takes visitors through a lush rain forest of philodendron vines, wild orchids, bamboo groves and hanging heliconia. The 100-foot Kahuna Falls come into view first, and they are impressive. But Akaka Falls, laden with ferns, are breathtaking.  The park entrance is at the end of Akaka Falls Road, Highway 220, 3.6 miles southwest of Honomu. The 0.4-mile loop footpath requires some physical exertion.

Kaumana Caves
Kaumana Cave-Free Admission-Ample Parking.  Picnic Tables and Restrooms.  This cave is actually a skylight in a 25-mile long lava tube that was created by an 1881 flow from Mauna Loa. Located near Hilo, the opening to the tube is overgrown with plants due to the ambundant rain on this side of the island. Long, thin roots reach all the way down to the floor of the lava tube. The opening is well-marked and a concrete staircase allows for easy entry to the cave. Bring a flashlight if you plan to explore the 2-mile long opening in the tube.  (From downtown Hilo, turn left of Waianuenue Avenue. Just past Mile Marker #1 bear left onto Kaumana Drive (a.k.a. Saddle Road). Kaumana Cave is located on the right just past Mile Marker #4.)

Mauna Loa Macadamia Nuts Visitor Center- 8:30-5:30 Take a tour through the factory of the world's largest macadamia nut company. Watch how the nuts are processed, roasted, and packaged, or made into chocolate and candied confections.  After driving through our plantation, you'll tour our factory, shop in our factory store, sample our delicious products, and maybe best of all, stroll our comfortable nature walk, where more than 30 stunning tropical plants are in constant bloom (bring a camera!). The welcome mat is always out.

    Tantalus Lookout-Take a cool, refreshing drive through a lush, green rain forest that opens up to the breathtaking panoramic view of Diamond Head, Waikiki, Punchbowl Crater, and Honolulu. Drive time is approximately 2 hours with stops. 
    Punchbowl Cemetary-(8-6:30)  Drive up to the statue and look at walls.  28,000 names are carved there. 
    (On leaving cemetary turn right/east on Auwaiolimu Ave. It will become Pensacola.  Turn left/east on Piikoi.  It will go to the mall.)

    Arizona MemorialUSS Arizona Memorial- Free 7:30-5  (Can only bring cameras, no camera bags or purses.)  Interpretive programs, including a documentary film about the attack on Pearl Harbor and the boat trip to the USS Arizona Memorial, begin at 8:00 a.m. (7:45 a.m. in summer). The last program each day begins at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are issued on a first come, first served basis. Visitors should expect crowds. Daily visitation to the park is about 4,500 people.
When guests enter the Visitor Center, they are asked to line up for a numbered ticket, which provides free admission to the Memorial tour. While waiting for the tour to begin, many visitors tour the Visitor Center and its shoreline exhibits including the museum and Remembrance Circle. When the number that appears on their ticket is called, visitors are asked to assemble at the theater entrance in preparation for the tour to begin. The guided tour of the USS Arizona Memorial includes a 23-minute documentary film depicting the attack on Pearl Harbor, a short boat trip and a self-guided exploration of the Memorial.
From the Honolulu/Waikiki area, take either Ala Moana Blvd./Nimitz Highway or H-1 Freeway West. While on H-1, look for the USS Arizona/Stadium exit, #15A. Stay on Kamehameha Hwy 99 going west, past Radford, past Arizona/Halawa Rd, then left on Arizona Memorial Place/Kalaloa.  The USS Arizona Memorial is located on the shoreline overlooking Pearl Harbor directly off of State Highway 99 (Kamehameha Highway) about a 45-minute drive west of Waikiki.
 

 

Battleship Missouri- (9-5) $16 to $39-Guided Tour, Ticket office located at the Bowfin Submarine Museum next to the Arizona Memorial Visitor Center - ticket office open 8am-4pm.  On September 2, 1945, the formal surrender papers were signed on the decks of this ship by Japan bringing an end to WWII..  Go to the USS Bowfin Submarine and Museum site for tickets and information on the battleship.)

Submarine: Visitors are given a walkman-style cassette player that narrates their tour as they explore this historic WWII submarine to imagine what life on board must have been like for her 80-man crew. USS Bowfin was launched on 7 December 1942 and completed nine successful war patrols.

Our 10,000 square foot Museum exhibits an impressive collection of submarine-related artifacts such as submarine weapon systems, photographs, paintings, battleflags, original recruiting posters, and detailed submarine models, all illustrating the history of the U.S. Submarine Service. Exhibits include a Poseidon C-3 missile that allows visitors to examine its inner workings.

Queen Emma's Summer Place

Barber's Point Lighthouse-This 71-foot high lighthouse stands on Barber's Point outside of Kalaeloa on the southwest tip of the island. The point is named for Captain Henry Barber whose ship wrecked on a coral shoal off the point on October 31, 1796. The lighthouse was originally established as a station in 1888. The current concrete structure went into service in 1933 and was automated in 1964. There is no lighthouse keeper quarters and it is not open to the public.

Diamond Head-40 minutes up to gain 560 feet in over in 1 mile.  Near end is 99 steps pls a spiral staircase followed by more steps.  The spectacular summit is at 761 foot.

Diamond Head Lighthouse-There is no public access to the lighthouse. The Diamond Head Lighthouse is built on the steep coast cliff of the extinct Diamond Head Volcano. The original lighthouse was built in 1899 and the original fresnel lens is still in use today. The current structure was erected in 1917. Built of reinforced concrete, the 55-foot lighthouse stands 147 feet above sea level and projects its light 18 miles out into the Pacific Ocean. The lighthouse is completely automated with a back-up battery in case of a power outage. The light keeper quarters were renovated and now serve as the residence of the 14th Coast Guard District Commander.
    (From Diamond Head Rd follow the signs going East (to your left) to Kalanianaole Highway/Route 72. Turn right/south on Portlock Rd.  Go left on Lawai, then right on Makaweli.  Turn right/south on Polpu Rd.  Turn left on Moloaa, then right on Lumahai St.)

Toilet Bowl-7455 Kalaniana'ole Highway-The Toilet Bowl is a natural pool formed by centuries of waves beating against the lava rock at Hanauma Bay. The trail to the Toilet Bowl can be treacherous and should not be attempted when the lifeguards close this area off to public access. When the Toilet Bowl is open, follow the path along the left side of Hanauma Bay.  The pool rises and falls with the tide. If conditions are right, you can sit in the pool and float up and down in a phenomenon similar to flushing a toilet.

Makapu'u Lighthouse
is one of Hawaii's most familiar landmarks commanding a spectacular view of the Windward side of O'ahu. The lighthouse was built in 1909 and automated in 1974. A 2-mile paved trail leads to the lighthouse and a fantastic view of the entire coastline and the island of Molokai in the distance.   Two smaller islands can be clearly seen from this lookout - Manana Island, the largest, and Kaohikaipu Island. The Molokai Channel runs past Makapu'u Lighthouse and is an excellent spot to watch Humpback whales as they travel the channel between December and April.  This is a moderate 2-mile hike that is paved but is quite steep in spots.

The Nuuanu Pali Lookout
("Cool Height Cliff") overlooking the 985 foot cliffs of the Koolau Mountain Range, is one of the best views on O'ahu. (9-4) Free and parking  It was here in 1795 that King Kamehameha and his warriors defeated the O'ahu armies by sending them over these steep, forested cliffs and claiming his victory and uniting the Hawaiian Islands. The breathtaking sight and the gruesome history of the battle fought here is enough to cause a chill to run up your spine. Add to that the incredible winds that often pass through the Pali and you may be swept off your feet!   Wear warmer clothes.

Visitors can learn how the Dole enterprise grew from a two-horse farm to the largest producer and marketer of pineapples in the world.  (Ten minutes from Haleiwa town on the North Shore From Waikiki, take H-1 West to H-2 North. Continue to Kamehameha Highway - Dole Plantation is located at 64-1550 Kamehameha Highway. Approximately 40-minute drive from Waikiki.)

Pu'u O Mahuka Heiau
("Hill of Escape") is a well-preserved temple and is the largest on O'ahu covering over 5-acres and consisting of three adjoining enclosures measuring 575 feet by 170 feet. This was considered a powerful place for the kahuna and one of two places where wives of the ancient chiefs gave birth. This heiau may also have been a site of human sacrifice. In the upper section is a raised mound surrounded by stones that may have been a central alter. The stonework of this heiau shows a high degree of craftsmanship, expecially on the pathways. (Take Kamehameha Highway past Waimea Beach Park, Waimea Valley, and the Church of Saint Peter and Paul going toward Pupukea on the North Shore. Go about 1 mile and take a right onto Pupukea Road. About 2/3 mile up this road, turn right and drive another 3/4 mile over 10 speed bumps.  Free Parking at the site.)
    Waimea Bay-20-40 ft waves in the winter.  Most famous surf beach.  (Go to left side of bay.  There's a dedicated public access from the end of Iliohu Place, then a short walk leads to a wicked vantage point.)
    Sharks Cove-Summer snorkeling area with tide pool.  Enter from the right side.  Stay inside cove.  Good views of fish and turtles with occasional octupus’.  Can rent snorkel gear across from old gas station by Foodland.
