Mammoth Passage Tour: Follow your guide to the Historic
Entrance where the cave was first discovered more than 4,000 years ago.
Entering the cave, imagine early visitors as they walked through these
"Mammoth Passages". Visit one of the largest rooms in the cave and see
remains of an early mining operation. This is an easy introductory tour
to Mammoth Cave. •1¼ hours, ¾ mile. Tour limit: 40. Total stairs: 160.

Frozen Niagara Tour: Depart by bus and journey over the top of
the cave to the Frozen Niagara Entrance. The entrance, created in 1924,
makes it possible to see this decorative area of the cave. Walk through
a fairyland of formations to learn how travertine is formed. Pass
through Rainbow Dome, then see Crystal Lake, Moonlight Dome and Onyx
Collonade before arriving at the Frozen Niagara flowstone. Descend steps
under the Frozen Niagara formation to visit the Drapery Room before
returning to the surface. This easy trip is ideal for people who want a
short introduction to Mammoth Cave. •1¼ hours, ¼ mile. Tour limit: 36.
Total stairs: 12, plus an optional 98. Elevation change: 40’. •Includes
parts of the New Entrance and Grand Avenue tour routes. Not available by

Historic Tour: Entering the cave through the Historic
Entrance, you will feel the excitement that intrigued the earliest
explorers and visitors. Experience the history and the role Mammoth Cave
played during the War of 1812. Large passages invite you to imagine what
it would have been like for prehistoric discoverers who walked these
passages more than 2,000 years ago. Descend into the lower levels of the
cave and follow in the footsteps of the first explorers who crossed the
Bottomless Pit. Squeeze through Fat Man’s Misery. Climb 155 stairs up
Mammoth Dome and exit through the Historic Entrance. •2 hours, 2 miles.
Tour limit: 120. Total stairs: 440, including 155 at Mammoth Dome.
Elevation change: 300’. •Limited areas of the Mammoth Cave Discovery,
Mammoth Passage, Star Chamber, River Styx and Violet City Lantern Tours
are visited on this route. •Meets at the Visitor Center. Difficulty:

New Entrance Tour: A bus ride carries you to the New
Entrance—opened in the 1920s, it provided a whole new way to see Mammoth
Cave. Impressive pits, domes, and a few narrow openings soon give way to
large passages and underground hills. Follow your guide to the Frozen
Niagara formation, discovered in 1923. From Frozen Niagara to the cave
exit you will pass through one of the most decorative and photographed
areas of Mammoth Cave. •2 hours, ¾ mile. Tour limit: 114. Total stairs:
500, including 280 on initial descent. Elevation change: 250’. •Includes
the complete Frozen Niagara Tour route and a portion of the Grand Avenue
Tour route. If you have weak knees, think twice about taking this tour.

Grand Avenue Tour: This physically demanding trip unveils the
size and complexity of the Mammoth Cave system. Learn the interwoven
natural and cultural history of the cave as you journey through some of
the cave’s most dramatic passages. Discover gypsum-encrusted halls,
twisting canyons, underground hills, vast chambers, and tapestries of
dripstone. Enter through Carmichael Entrance to visit Cleaveland Avenue,
the Snowball Room, Boone Avenue, Thorpe’s Pit, Mt. McKinley, Grand
Canyon, Aerobridge Canyon, the Hippodrome, Grand Central Station, and
exit through the beautiful Frozen Niagara section. This tour has no
shortage of hills and stairs! •4½ hours, 4 miles. Tour limit: 78. Age
limit: 6 and older. Total stairs: 670. Elevation change: 280’, with
hills more than 60’ in some places’. •The Snowball and Frozen Niagara
Tour routes, and portions of the New Entrance tour route, are seen on
this tour. This tour is not recommended for visitors who have heart or
respiratory illnesses, diabetes or walking difficulty. Food is available
at the Snowball Room. Box lunch costs $7.50 (cash only). Visitors may
opt to carry their own picnic lunch into the cave, but must pack it in a
clear, see-through backpack or large ziplock bags. Food is allowed only
at Snowball Room. •Meets at the Visitor Center. Difficulty: Strenuous.

Snowball Tour: Walk through some of the largest passages in
the cave by lantern light as guides recreate the experience of the first
visitors in the 1800’s. Become part of the tradition of visiting one of
the oldest tourist attractions in the country. Relive the stories and
illusions witnessed by Ralph Waldo Emerson and others of his day. See
evidence of saltpetre production, an underground hospital and
prehistoric mining of cave minerals. Enter through the Natural Entrance
and visit the Narrows, the Rotunda, Broadway Avenue, Giant’s Coffin,
Star Chamber, Wright’s Rotunda, the Cataracts, Chief City, Mummy Ledge,
Elisabeth’s Dome, and exit by way of the Violet City Entrance. •3 hours,
3 miles. Tour limit: 38. Age limit: 6 and older. Total stairs: 160, and
numerous hills without handrails. Elevation change: 160’. •Includes
parts of the Historic, Discovery, Star Chamber, and Mammoth Passage Tour
routes. Lanterns may cause some discomfort for visitors with respiratory
illnesses. Only adults may carry lanterns.Only adults may carry the

River Styx Cave Tour: Trace the stages of cave development
from solid layers of limestone to the world’s longest known cave system.
Hike from ridge top to underground river and witness the persistent
power of the water that created this geologic marvel. Experience some of
the largest continuous canyon passages on the planet, smooth elliptical
tubes and beautifully sculpted shafts. At the cave’s lowest level, peer
into the cold waters of the Dead Sea, River Styx and Lake Lethe, still
working to lengthen the cave system. •2½ hours, 2½ miles. Tour limit:
40. Total stairs: 500 including 155 at Mammoth Dome. Elevation change:
360’. •This tour covers the entire Historic Tour route. Limited sections
of the Star Chamber, Mammoth Passage and Mammoth Cave Discovery Tours
are also seen. •Meets at the Visitor Center. Difficulty: Moderate.

Star Chamber Tour: See the cave as it was seen by Ralph Waldo
Emerson, Jenny Lind and other nineteenth-century notables. Leave waning
sunshine behind as you enter Mammoth Cave‘s Historic Entrance by lantern
light. Follow the paths taken daily by Dr. John Croghan as he tended
consumptive patients in his “hospital" 160 feet underground. Gaze upward
at rock layers in a room called “Star Chamber." Follow your guide as you
retrace the oldest tour trails and exit the cave into another Star
Chamber above the nocturnal Kentucky landscape. •2 1/4 hours, 1½ miles.
Tour limit: 40. Age limit: 6 and older. Total stairs: 200. Elevation
change: 160’. •Includes parts of the Gothic, Historic, Discovery, Violet City
Lantern, and Mammoth Passage Tour routes. Lanterns may cause some

Gothic Avenue: This tour begins at the Visitor Center and
enters that now famous entrance, as the ranger interprets areas
including the Rotunda, the Church, Giant's Coffin, and the TB Huts. The
tour backtracks Broadway Avenue and enters Gothic Avenue, one of the
most historically significant passageways in the cave. This area
showcases hundreds of examples of nineteenth-century candle-written
signatures and monuments left behind by visitors nearly 200 years ago.
Gothic Avenue is also included in the Star Chamber Tour that is offered
during spring, summer and fall. 2 hours, 1 mile

Wild Cave Tour: Meet Mammoth Cave on its own terms as you and
a small group of adventurers don helmets, headlamps, boots and kneepads
and venture into miles of undeveloped passageways. Climb, crawl and
canyonwalk your way through passageways no other tour sees. On the way,
your guides will share their knowledge of the history and geology of
places like Cleaveland’s Cabinet, Thorpe’s Pit, and Cathedral Domes. You
must be prepared for free-climbing cave walls; lengthy crawls through
areas as tight as 9 inches high; walking in a crouched position; hand
and knee crawls over jagged rocks and dirt; crawling through wet areas;
twisting into and out of tight crawlway openings. •6-6½ hours, 5 miles.
Tour limit: 14. Age limit: 16+; proof of age may be requested. Total
stairs: . Elevation change: 300’. •An adult must accompany visitors
under age 18. Chest or hip measurement must not exceed 42 inches; if you
are larger, you cannot physically pass through the crawlspaces.
High-top, over-the-ankle lace-up boots, with lug or deeply treaded
soles, are required. No low-cut hiking or athletic shoes allowed. You
will not be allowed to participate in the tour if you are not wearing
proper footwear—No exceptions. Gym shorts and t-shirts are recommended
for wear under coveralls. Please bring extra pair of tennis shoes or
sandals for use during boot decontamination at the end of the tour. All
equipment and outerwear provided; no personal caving equipment allowed.
Food is available at the Snowball Room. A box lunch can be purchased for
$7.50 (cash only). Visitors may bring a lunch and/or water bottle-a
small fanny pack will be provided. Bring no cameras—there will be no
opportunity to use them on this activity. Requires at least 2
participants. Reserved tickets not claimed 30 minutes prior to tour
departure may be re-sold. •Meets at the Visitor Center. Difficulty: Very
